Ethics in the Digital Age: Navigating Technology,
AI and Social Media in a Rapidly Changing World

AI, social media, and other technology tools are great ways for attorneys to enhance their practice and the client experience. But lawyers must be mindful that the Rules of Professional Conduct require lawyers to use these tools ethically and to be technologically competent. The use of AI and various forms of technology present ethical traps. Additionally, technology has made it possible for scammers to target lawyers as a source of information and money. How can lawyers protect against these threats? How can attorneys use technology in their practice to connect with the public in a way that complies with the Rules of Professional Conduct? How can attorneys best leverage new AI tools to create efficiencies in the practice of law? Through a discussion of the Rules of Professional Conduct, ethics opinions, and hypotheticals, we’ll address these issues and more.

Program topics include:
• Ethically using generative AI, social media, and other technology tools
• The requirement of technological competence
• Protecting against cyber scams
• Managing professional networking websites and online client reviews
• Protecting client confidentiality
• Maintaining data privacy safeguards
• Understanding new NC State Bar ethics opinions
