Starting Fresh – Reviewing the Basics
This CLE provides a practical, back-to-basics review of some core components of a North Carolina real estate transaction, with a focus on common issues that arise when fundamentals are overlooked. The presentation walks through the life of a transaction—title searching and document review, preparing the preliminary title opinion, coordinating with title insurers, proper execution and recording of documents, and ultimately requesting the final title policy. Emphasis will be placed on best practices, common pitfalls, and practical tips to improve efficiency, reduce risk, and ensure compliance at each stage of the closing process.
Presented by Michelle Church who serves as Vice President of Operations and Title Counsel. She oversees the company's operations and manages the title insurance underwriting process and our team of nine licensed underwriters. She has experience in several areas of law including real estate transactions, collections, and tax foreclosures. She began her career working for multiple-sized law firms ranging from a solo practitioner to an AM200 law firm. Additionally, her experience includes working for the legal department of BB&T and as a Research Consultant for the Carolina Panthers.
